I am planning to take one photo a week of my kids standing in front of the same tree. I don't try to make them pose or wear matching outfits. You can see they have been working on their snow hill this morning.

Birthday scavenger hunt

Today was my husband's 42nd birthday. Because his birthday is so soon after Christmas, I always have a difficult time thinking of good gifts for him.
This year was no exception. I actually waited until this morning to even go shopping because it took me that long to figure out what to get him!
Well, I have to say that I should win the good wife award for this year. I went a little crazy and came up with some AWESOME gifts.
A few of the gifts were kind of large, so instead of wrapping them, I created a scavenger hunt. I made one clue from each of the kids.
He was puzzled at first about the clues and what they meant. Each one had a little poem that told him where to find the gifts. The first gift was from Jayda. It was an ice-scraping tool he can use to smooth out the rough spots on the skating rink.
Gift #2 was kind of crazy. This one was from Alayna. It's a steam mop for our kitchen floor. I know. This gift is really for me. But it's a well-known fact you can't buy a mop for your wife. So, I decided I would give it to him instead and he could be happy to see me use it!
Gift #3 was from Matthew. It was a pair of ice skates so he could skate with the kids.
Gift #4 was the one that was the shocker! This one was from Andrew. It was a snow blower!
So, yes. I went totally overboard this year for his birthday. But he was so excited. And it was so much better than giving him the traditional sweater and socks.
The funny part about the whole scavenger hunt is that my husband is extremely low-key. During the search for the gifts, he seemed like he was just going along with my little game to be nice.
After it was over, he said, "That was one of the most fun birthdays I have ever had." He said it in a completely monotone voice. I wasn't sure if he was serious at first! But he really was! Not only did he love his gifts, but he had a great time finding them.

Kissing bandit

Before Christmas, we were reading one of our home-school books together when Jayda saw this woman on the page.
Before Christmas, we were reading one of our home-school books together when Jayda saw this woman on the page.
She leaned over and gave her a kiss. Then she kissed her again. And again. She wouldn't stop kissing that page.
For the next few days, if we needed to distract her so we could read, we would show her the photo of that woman dressed in her Muslim garb and let her kiss the photo. It was funny because we couldn't get her to kiss any of us. And she wasn't interested in any of the other photos in the book. Just that one.
This week, the kissing bandit returned. She started kissing the man on the cover of our "Twenty-one Balloons" book. Then, she started kissing this girl on the cover of "Listening to Crickets."
She even kissed her own reflection in the dishwasher.
We're hoping she will start kissing REAL people soon!

Back to work

They packed the recycling bins with snow to form bricks and then built a mound that was about 5 feet high. It had a smaller slope for snowboarding and a higher slope for sledding. It also had steps up the side and then a berm at the bottom to keep the kids from flying into the street.
For Christmas, the boys got snowboards, and they were really starting to gain some skill before the rain came and washed away all of the snow. The one thing that was left in our whole neighborhood was some of our sledding hill.
As soon as we finished school on Wednesday, Matthew was back to work, trying to rebuild it.

Baby play date

We had a playdate today with another home-schooling family. We are so thankful we have gotten to know this family. Out of the five children, they have a boy between the ages of my two boys, a younger daughter and a 1-year-old born just a month before Jayda.
It's hard to find time for baby playdates, so we enjoy watching our babies interact.

One kitty-cat shoe on

Jayda found her kitty-cat shoe and wanted to put it on. How can you blame her? The girl has good taste.
But we couldn't find the other one. It's hard enough to walk in bare feet. Walking with one kitty-cat shoe on and one kitty-cat shoe off is not easy!
